Biography

Sean P. Schmergel is a native of New York and has resided in Northern Virginia for over 20 years. He currently lives with his family in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Schmergel practices before the state and federal courts in Virginia and the District of Columbia with a focus on divorce and family law. He represents and counsels clients in all areas of domestic relations, including child custody and visitation disputes, protective orders, marital agreements, equitable distribution of property, alimony and child support matters.

Mr. Schmergel serves as a Guardian ad Litem in the Virginia courts, representing children in custody and visitation, and child abuse and neglect cases. He also regularly engages in pro bono and court-appointed representation of indigent clients in divorce, custody, domestic violence, and child abuse and neglect cases.

Prior to founding Schmergel & Mersberger, PLC, Mr. Schmergel worked for Labat-Anderson, Inc. in Washington, DC where he assisted the United States Department of Justice with all phases of litigation in the Cobell v. Salazar multi-billion dollar class action suit involving alleged mismanagement of Native American trust income.

Before obtaining his law degree, Mr. Schmergel was with McGuire Woods, LLP, in Tysons Corner, Virginia where he worked as an Urban Planner, preparing and presenting land use and zoning cases to local Boards of Supervisors and Planning Commissions in Northern Virginia. He received his law degree in 2000 from George Mason School of Law in Arlington, Virginia and in 1996 he received a B.A. in Government and Politics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Mr. Schmergel is a member of the Family Law sections of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, and he presently serves as the Secretary of the Alexandria Bar Association.

Biography

Dennis M. Mersberger is co-founder of Schmergel & Mersberger, PLC. He hails from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, but has made Alexandria, Virginia his home. Mr. Mersberger defends both adult and juvenile criminal and traffic matters before all state and federal courts in Virginia. He is a zealous advocate and will fiercely defend his clients' position, whether in trial before a judge or jury, or in plea negotiations with the prosecution.

Mr. Mersberger worked with some of the best criminal defense lawyers in Northern Virginia, honing his practice prior to opening his own firm with Mr. Schmergel. While a student at George Mason University School of Law, Mr. Mersberger participated in a legal clinic with the courts of Fairfax County, Virginia and in particular worked with the judges of the Fairfax County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court on cases ranging from juvenile delinquency to domestic assault.

Mr. Mersberger is a member of the Criminal Law section of the Virginia State Bar and he serves as Committee Chair to the Alexandria Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service.
