There are several reasons a person’s driver’s license can be suspended and in Virginia, if they drive during that time, there can be serious penalties.

Reasons for suspension

One of the most common reasons for suspension is a traffic violation. This can include speeding, running a red light or driving recklessly. Also, if a driver receives a traffic fine and refuses to pay it, their license can be suspended.

Other reasons include driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failing to appear in court to respond to a traffic ticket and driving without insurance. Also, if a driver is in an accident and leaves the scene, also known as a hit and run, that can result in a driver’s license suspension.

Drivers may also be surprised to know that they can face suspension for unpaid child support, unpaid taxes, violation of a court order, and fraudulent activities.

Potential penalties

There are a range of penalties that may apply. The driver could be sentenced to jail time and a fine, probation where the court will monitor them and ensure they comply with certain conditions and an extension of the driver’s license suspension.

The driver may have to pay increased car insurance premiums or may have their vehicle impounded. A driver’s license suspension in Virginia may carry over to another state.

A criminal record can limit the driver’s employment, housing and educational opportunities. It can also cause them to suffer reputational harm.
